Please join us again tomorrow at Oakbank.
A message from our campaign director Elio Celotto: Today was the 10th year that the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses, along with Animal Liberation SA, have demonstrated at the Oakbank Easter Jumps Carnival. In our first year, attendance figures were 120,000 over the 2 days of racing. Since then the carnivals attendance figures have been plummeting. The carnival now for several years has been losing money. So they had to act. And what did they do? They moved their feature race, the Great Eastern Steeplechase, to Easter Saturday to attract race goers. The decision would determine two things. Firstly, it meant if their numbers don’t increase it is proof that people are not there for the jumps races. And secondly, if they didn’t increase, it means the Easter Monday races will attract an even smaller crowd. Last year, the estimated attendance figure was 30,000. I’m happy to report that in the 10 years I’ve been going to Oakbank I’ve never seen so few people. My estimate is there were no more than 20,000. The experiment has failed! Racegoers have voted by their non attendance and now surely the message is clear, they must ban jumps racing before the next victim is the carnival itself. Many thanks to ALSA and all our supporters who come year after year. Our persistence is paying off. PS - If you’d like to join us on Monday, we’ll be back! ... See more
We have once again had this design rejected by the outdoor media company as they "have to look after their reputation". It's disappointing that truth is considered too controversial. We must work to keep our exisiting billboards in place as they are only being shown as they were approved prior to the stricter guidelines. If you are able to help us to fundraise or are able to donate we are most grateful. Animal Lib SA is an entirely volunteer organisation. All of us who are working for ALSA do so for free and also have other jobs and busy lives. So you can be sure that 100% of donations goes to campaigning. ... See more
